Rowan is the most colourful of the Finnish natural trees. It blooms in June and the berries are ready for picking in August-September. A couple of dozens of kilos ripen per tree. It is normal that the rowan renders a plentiful berry crop every second year unless outside factors disturb the tree growth.
Rowanberries are sour, since they contain a lot of sorbic acid. The first frosts of the autumn usually make the sourness a little less pointed. The vitamin C content of the berries is also high. Rowanberries are used as raw-material for jams, gelés, sweets and alcoholic beverages, among other things. Traditionally, rowanberries have been used to treat lung problems and rheumatism as well as to increase the secretion of urine.
